What is Kambo?

Kambo, Campu, Acaté (Phyllomedusa Bicolor) is a large green tree frog from the Amazon rainforest. The frogs produce a defensive skin secretion to protect against potential predators and pathogens. This resin is known to have beneficial effects on the human mind and body.

Many tribes have been collecting Kambo's secretion and using it in healing rituals for thousands of years. Amongst these cultures, it is powerful shamanic medicine traditionally used to cleanse the mind, body and spirit.

What Are the Effects of Kambo?

Applying Kambo triggers an extremely powerful detoxification: the liver, kidneys, gall bladder, lungs, stomach, lymphatic system, brain, bladder and more are deeply cleansed.

What also can be experienced by this flush is an emotional cleanse: unexpressed emotions, traumas and experiences that seem to be held in the body. These have the potential to cause many types of illnesses and imbalances.

This medicine pushes stagnation and blockages out of the body, leaving it clearer, and allowing the system to flow and operate in its intended state.

Without the accumulated stagnation of emotional and physical toxicity, the body is more energised and has a stronger immune defence, the skin is clearer, the senses are sharper and more heightened, the mind is calmer and more focused, and the memory more efficient.

Kambo Science

Kambo contains a huge number of peptides. These are short chains of amino acids that performs functions in the human body. Other well known peptides are oxytocin, insulin and growth hormones.

Kambo's peptides are bioactive: they are completely natural and readily accepted by the human body. They can perform beneficial processes without causing damage or stress to the cells, and unlike most chemical pharmaceutical medicines Kambo leaves no residue behind. In fact, Kambo is effective for detoxing drugs and pharmaceuticals from the body.

A few identified peptides include:

Adenoregulin: This works with the adenosine receptors. It is a power antibiotic and an antimicrobial. It has been shown to be effective in killing cancer cells by turning off their food supply.

Dermaseptin: This has a potent effect against many types of bacteria, yeast, protozoa, and viruses (including herpes (HSV-1) and HIV).

Deltorphin and Dermorphin: These interact with the opioid receptors, blinding receptors and triggering a strong pain killing effect. It is said to be 30-40 times more potent than morphine (yet non-drowsy + non-addictive).

Phyllomedusin: This affects the tear ducts, salivary glands, intestines and bowels. It contributes to deep purging of toxins experienced with Kambo.

Phyllokinin: This is a potent vessel dilator and increases the permeability of the blood-brain barrier. It useful for treating hypertension; proven to provide long lasting reduction of blood pressure.

Tryptophyllin: This peptide has been found to be highly effective at treating Candida Albicans bacteria.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee scientist Vittorio Erspamer (famed for identifying the neurotransmitter serotonin) was the first of scientific researchers to analyse Kambo. He concluded that Kambo contained a ‘fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications’.

What Are the Benefits of Kambo?

Across the Amazon jungle, Kambo is widely referred to as vacina da floresta - the vaccine of the forest. The beneficial effects from Kambo are varied: most sickness - physical, emotional and mental - have a physical root in the body. Therefore Kambo can address a wide range of ailments.

Scientific study has identified that Kambo is a natural antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-fungal and antiviral substance. Therefore it has an incredible ability to treat viruses, infections, diseases, and imbalances such as malaria, sexual transmitted diseases, cancer, Parkinson’s, infertility, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS and many others.

Its effects on mental health are also abundant, as our moods are connected to what we are carrying in our systems. When we cleanse these emotional and physical stagnations, we can feel more peaceful, with more positivity, inspiration, strength, endurance and flow in what we do.

Therefore Kambo is also extremely effective at treating psychological illnesses such as anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.

The Detox

For us Kambo is the ultimate detox, it has the ability to penetrate deep with the system, to the bones and into the cells to release and clear out toxins.

I've experienced many examples of cases in which Kambo's benefits have been incredible. These include clients detoxing from years of drug addiction, as well as a lovely client who had finished a course of chemotherapy. With the latter, we watched as fluorescent orange chemicals were flushed out of her. The last few years have shown me the capability of this detox and its ability to release.

The Process

Kambo is received via small shallow superficial burns made to the skin. These are usually made using a natural incense stick, although traditionally they use a small dried vine.

The first part of the treatment involves drinking a large amount of water. Next, we apply the Kambo, which triggers a massive release of toxins from the organs and into the water. The water is then purged via vomiting, carrying the blockages out.

The process usually starts with feeling heat in the face. It's common to feel sweaty, nauseous, and to vomit or need to use the loo.

Story of Kambo

There is an ancient story of how the Kambo came to the people of the Huni Kuin tribe of Brazil. Along time ago a sickness ravaged their villages, the Pajé (medicine man) known as Kampu had tried everything he could using all the medicines and rituals he knew, but nothing was helping his people.

In desperation he journeyed deep into nature to meditate, where he received a vision from the forest. She instructed him on how to find a certain frog, explaining how to harvest the milky resin that was secreted from its skin. He learnt how to apply it to a human body and understood its medicinal power.

Kampu sought out this frog, collected its medicine, rushed back to his village to  share it with his people, who were cured. Many years later when Kampu died they say his spirit entered the frog.

Purging

Understandably, purposeful and beneficial throwing up/purging can be a very strange concept for people from Western cultures. We do not have experience with these techniques and the idea of being sick is more commonly related to having drunk too much alcohol or having food poisoning. Purging is actually a very normal and common thing for many cultures across the planet.

In India salt water is drunk to throw up and detoxify the digestive track. Similarly in West Africa some tribes drink the brew of a strong purgative leaf to cleanse their livers and bodies to prepare for ceremonies. Other examples of purposeful vomiting include Peruvian indigenous rituals, during which milk is extracted from a certain seed and drunk to cleanse the body. On the same continent, Amazonian tribes drink tobacco juice to detox through vomiting, whilst some snort powders to the same effect. Further examples include Mexican tribes ingesting a bitter cactus in order to heal sickness.

So this is not something new - it has been tried and tested for thousands of years. Within these traditions, throwing up ('purging') is a key component to health and balance. I believe in revitalising our culture's connection to the body through this integral ritual. Now we have the opportunity to relearn from those that have maintained their practises and knowledge.
